I love researching
because I find things like this Niklaus Troxler's legendary jazz posters of the 60's (he's still going!) and I get to listen to Free and Bad Company for hours..

what does it mean to 'respond'?
This week we were asked to make a couple of responses for uni. It made me think what a 'response' is? It's something that I tend to struggle with. Do you simply interpret the information your given, or do you put something of your own opinion into your 'response'? Do you edit the information? Or is it simply going in and then coming out in a different form (like a meat mincer).
I looked up the dictionary definition;
1. To make a reply, answer.
2. To act in return or in answer.
3. To react positively or favourably.
In graphic design terms, or simply just design, I think these should be more;
1. To visually make a reply.
2. To visual act in answer.
The third isn't. As a designer you defiantly shouldn't like everything. Even the opposite, it's important not to like everything, and to react to that.
I think this is something I need to explore more. Watch this space. For now here is my response to the film 'Hell is a city'. Which was a British Noir film, made in 1959.

disneyland paris
Yes it was magical, but I have worked it out. Disneyland is everything that is bad in the world.
Disney land Paris cost $1.9 BILLION to originally build, since then it has been bailed out twice by various people with more money than sense. How can people still be dying of dirty water? And how can something so horrible come out of the simple want to make cartoons?

Art as experience
I've started to read 'art as experience' by John Dewey, who I believe is/was a philospher. It's all about how only the experience of the viewer makes something art, and how aesthetics work. This is the first line;
"By one of the ironic perversities that often attend the course of affairs, the existence of the works of art upon which formation of an aesthetic theory depends has become an obstruction to theory about them."
gosh.

dirty habit
The Happy HypocriteI found this magazine in the Saatchi today, its really lovely. Its layout is really experimental and reflects the subject matter, 'for and about experimental art writing'. I'm not really sure what that means.Anyway, I looked up the publishershttp://www.bookworks.org.uk/asp/home.asp'Book Works is a registered charity, set up to advance education for the benefit of the public in the visual arts, particularly in the form of books, which may be recognised as art forms in their own right'What a great idea.
